Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are medical conditions that are non-transmissable or non-infectious. Examples of NCDs include (but are not limited to) cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that by 2020, NCDs will account for about 60% of disease among people in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Founded by Nigerian-Canadian Ebele Mogo, the 'Engage Africa Foundation' seeks to raise awareness about NCDs through research and health promotion. Apart from having worked at the World Health Organisation Centre in Japan, Mogo is also the recipient of an MSc in Global Health and Public Policy from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
The Engage Africa Foundation's first step towards their goal of reducing chronic NCDs in Africa is "piloting a research survey that assesses the prevalence and distribution of chronic disease."
