The Chapel by Gensler Promotes Peaceful Prayer
Jana Pijak — October 11, 2012 — Art & Design
The Chapel by Gensler is a prayer space built within a California university campus. Made with local materials, the bold space embodies its natural setting. The chapel is built below ground and windowless, featuring a number of cleverly conceived openings that let in vibrant rays of natural light.
The interior's undulating ceiling curves and is constructed from heavily layered wooden panels. Douglas fir and locally harvested olive wood pieces are randomly stacked together creating an awe-inspiring and striking architectural element.
Made from only the most natural of materials, the Chapel by Gensler features a custom banana and cactus leaf carpet and a 2m olive tree cross keeping with its ecologically responsible design concept. This student prayer space epitomizes peace and meditation while promoting sustainable building practices.
