EndeavourOS, an Arch-based Linux distribution, has recently announced the release of its Gemini update, which introduces the KDE Plasma 6 desktop environment. This update marks a significant milestone for the distribution, as it not only brings the latest features and improvements from the KDE community but also offers users the choice between Wayland or X11 display server protocols. The Gemini release is named after the NASA program that served as a bridge between the Mercury and Apollo missions, symbolizing the update’s role in transitioning the operating system to new heights. The development team has worked diligently to ensure that the release is stable and efficient, overcoming challenges to deliver the update in a relatively short time frame.
The Gemini update includes several notable changes and enhancements. It ships with Calamares 3.3.5, Firefox 125.0.1-1, Linux kernel 6.8.7.arch1-1, and the Mesa 24.0.5-1 graphics stack. Noteworthy among the updates is the switch from Nvidia-dkms to Nvidia packages to address freezing issues during the live environment boot process when Nvidia boot was selected. Additionally, the EFI partition is now correctly created when the “replace partition” option is chosen during installation. The update also sees the return of Gparted to the ISO, complementing the KDE partition manager, and introduces improvements to EndeavourOS apps and libraries, such as new options for eos-update and support for URL expiration in eos-sendlog.
