It's hard to picture these days, but in the late 80s and early 90s, web searching was completely non-existent. If you told someone to Google something, they'd probably have no clue what you were talking.

At any rate, web searching and search engines as a whole turn 20 this year, which makes Monetate's evolutionary search engine infographic all the more timely. There's a surprising amount of work and development that's gone into the last 20 years of search engine optimization and improvement.

Yahoo! was the first major company to get on the web searching bandwagon, but even they were predated in 1993 by AliWeb and JumpStation. If you haven't heard of them, it's because people generally forget who did things first and focus on who did it best. Google has definitely won this search engine race for top spot.
