Vollebak is exploring wearable stone jackets with the Rock Jacket, a one-off cropped Harrington constructed from roughly 54,000 miniature slate tiles. Developed with French material technologist Steven Leprizé, the jacket uses 5mm-square slate pieces measuring just 0.5mm thick, bonded under pressure to a flexible neoprene backing. The process adapts Leprizé’s WooWood elastic marquetry technique to stone, allowing the naturally rigid material to move with the wearer. Cordura pockets, taped seams and a zipper complete the $50,000 piece.
The project demonstrates how unconventional natural materials can be engineered for functional fashion rather than remaining decorative elements. For Vollebak, an extreme limited piece reinforces its position in experimental luxury apparel and creates attention around its material research. The technique could also inspire broader applications for flexible stone surfaces across fashion, accessories and design.

What Makes This Trend Stand Out
- Flexible Natural Materials
- Rigid organic surfaces such as stone, wood, and shell are gaining new relevance as engineered composites for wearable and functional products.
- Experimental Luxury Apparel
- High-priced one-off garments are becoming brand laboratories where material innovation, scarcity, and storytelling combine to define premium differentiation.
- Stone-based Wearables
- Miniaturized mineral components on flexible backings point to new aesthetics and performance possibilities in fashion, accessories, and protective design.
Sectors Adopting This
- Fashion
- Material-led garment construction is expanding the creative palette for designers seeking distinctive textures, limited editions, and functional luxury concepts.
- Materials Science
- Hybrid bonding techniques for brittle natural materials create pathways for flexible surfaces across apparel, interiors, and product design.
- Luxury Goods
- Rare experimental objects can strengthen brand equity by turning advanced craftsmanship and unconventional materials into collectible cultural statements.
