Spotify Released Lossless Streaming 8 Years After Announcing It

— September 10, 2025 — Tech
Spotify has begun rolling out lossless audio streaming to Premium subscribers, offering uncompressed playback in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC format across nearly every track in its library. This addition joins existing Premium features such as DJ, AI Playlist, and Mix, and is designed to provide listeners with a richer, more detailed experience. Gustav Gyllenhammar, Spotify’s Vice President of Subscriptions, stated that the company prioritized quality, ease of use, and clarity in developing the feature, ensuring subscribers always know what is happening “under the hood” when Lossless is active.

Subscribers can manually enable Lossless in the app’s Media Quality settings for Wi-Fi, cellular, and downloads, choosing between Low, Normal, High, Very High, and Lossless tiers while viewing associated data usage estimates. A Lossless indicator appears in the Now Playing view and the Connect Picker once the feature is enabled. For optimal performance, Spotify recommends streaming lossless audio over Wi-Fi with wired headphones or speakers via Spotify Connect, as Bluetooth does not support the required bandwidth. Lossless is available on mobile, desktop, tablet, and compatible Spotify Connect devices from Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser, with support for Sonos and Amazon hardware arriving next month. The feature will reach more than 50 markets through October, and Premium users will receive a notification when Lossless becomes available in their region.
