Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. proved that children can indeed warm up to monstrous characters, which is probably why illustrator Sam Nielson kept the ball rolling with his whimsical renderings of kids playing around with horrific beasts.
Though many of Sam Nielson’s creatures are in fact grotesque, their innocuous mannerisms dilute the physical threat they present, making them kind of endearing in the process. When you pair that with the fun color palettes Nielson uses in each piece, you get illustrations that are a certified hit with those still young at heart.
Sam Nielson is a Utah-based illustrator currently working at Avalanche Software/Disney Interactive Studios. His kid-friendly style of painting demonstrates a creative mind and fun personality. I love that he toys around with physical attributes and proportions with little regard to reality.
