AI-Powered Drive-Thru Systems

McDonald's Unveils Its ArchIQ Ordering Platform

McDonald’s began testing ArchIQ, a Google-powered AI drive-thru ordering platform, at five U.S. locations, using conversational AI to take orders, process modifications and display totals for customers before directing them to the pickup window. Nicknamed “Archy” by a franchise owner, the system supports both English and Spanish interactions and is designed to handle most orders without requiring staff intervention.

The pilot was unveiled at McDonald’s 2026 worldwide convention as part of the company’s broader automation strategy. According to a franchise owner involved in the test, roughly 90% of orders have been completed without human escalation. The platform can respond to customer requests, accommodate order changes and recognize repeat visitors asking for their usual order, while working alongside restaurant crews rather than replacing them.

For customers, ArchIQ aims to deliver faster, more consistent drive-thru experiences while reducing friction during ordering. The initiative reflects a wider fast-food industry trend toward AI-assisted operations, as major restaurant chains explore automation tools that improve speed and accuracy while maintaining hospitality standards.
