Oversized Chair Structures

Monumental Moving Furniture Turns Chairs into Walk-Through Forms

The Monumental Moving Furniture is a series of oversized steel chair structures designed to be walked through rather than sat on. The project enlarges the familiar proportions of a chair into an architectural scale, transforming a functional object into an immersive spatial experience. Monumental Moving Furniture maintains the recognizable geometry of a seat, backrest, and legs while removing usability, shifting focus toward movement and perception within the form. The structures allow users to pass through openings where surfaces would typically support weight.

It is constructed from steel; the pieces emphasize outline over mass, using negative space to define pathways instead of seating areas. The design reframes furniture as an environment rather than an object, positioning each structure between sculpture and architecture.

Monumental Furniture
Scaling everyday objects into walk-through architectural forms creates new experiential destinations that repurpose furniture as spatial infrastructure.
Negative-space Pathways
Emphasizing outline over mass shifts design emphasis to circulation and perception, enabling lightweight structural systems that guide movement.
Furniture-as-environment
Transforming chairs into immersive environments blurs boundaries between sculpture and architecture, fostering hybrid public installations that redefine urban placemaking.

Industries Being Reshaped

Public Art and Placemaking
Large-scale walk-through furniture introduces novel site-specific attractions that can anchor cultural districts and increase pedestrian engagement.
Event and Experiential Design
Immersive furniture forms offer brands distinct, navigable settings for creating memorable temporary activations and audience interactions.
Modular Steel Fabrication
Outline-focused steel constructions suggest efficient modular assemblies that simplify transport, erection, and reuse of oversized installations.
