Google is Releasing Mobility Reports Using In-Depth Location History

Google announced through a blog post that it will be publishing mobility reports related to COVID-19. The tech giant named the project COVID-19 Community Mobility reports, where location data is used map and track the virus. The company also indicated how these reports can inform efforts to slow the spread of the virus, “Ultimately, understanding not only whether people are traveling, but also trends in destinations, can help officials design guidance to protect public health and essential needs of communities.”

Overall the reports show how big tech can bolster contract tracing efforts in order to help virus prevention efforts. Additionally, the reports can shed light on the activities that people are engaging in including grocery store trips and more. However, Google is taking some privacy measures by not publishing the number of visits.
