Quilted Shell Armchairs

JOSEPH Armchair by Wittmann Pairs Flat Upholstery with Quilted Outer Shell

The JOSEPH armchair is a seating design by Philippe Nigro for Austrian manufacturer Wittmann. The chair reinterprets the traditional club chair by combining a smooth upholstered seat and backrest with a structured outer shell. The interior surfaces are kept flat and continuous, while the surrounding shell is finished with a gridded quilted pattern that forms the armrests and encloses the seating area.

The contrast between the soft interior and the defined exterior creates a dual construction that separates comfort from structure. The chair is built with a pocket spring core and layered foam system, supporting weight distribution across the seat and back. The proportions are compact, allowing the piece to function as both an armchair and a dining or meeting chair, depending on configuration. Versions are available with visible or recessed castors integrated into the base. The design references early twentieth-century geometric furniture through its grid pattern and rigid outline.

Dual-texture Seating
Emerging designs that pair smooth, flat interiors with structured, quilted exteriors suggest novel material and manufacturing approaches for distinct comfort and support zones.
Quilted Exterior Shells
The prominence of gridded, quilted outer shells points to new possibilities in aesthetic-driven structural reinforcement and customizable surface engineering.
Compact Multi-function Chairs
Compact proportions and convertible use as both armchairs and dining or meeting chairs indicate potential for space-saving, multifunctional seating systems.

Where This Applies
