A new IBM AI model can predict malignant breast cancer a year before it occurs. The AI can predict within 87% accuracy when compared to Radiologists. Other similar AI model use one of two things, the first is mammogram images and the other is medical records. IBM's AI goes further and utilizes both, which may be the reason it is more accurate than other models. The AI is trained with anonymized mammography images that can be linked to biomarkers as well as clinical data.
However, the IBM AI should not be the only tool implemented to detect potential cancers. IBM thinks it can be used as a potential, "second set of eyes." Technology like this could be helpful for places with limited staff, where the AI can take some of the burden off of human staff.
