Finnish Brands Introduce Trout Products Made with Insect Proteins

— April 8, 2025 — Lifestyle
Finnish consumers can now try a limited-edition rainbow trout fillet raised with insect-based feed—a pioneering step in sustainable aquaculture. Available for just two weeks, the Kalaonni Arkinen trout showcases a more eco-friendly way to farm fish, reducing reliance on traditional feed ingredients.

The initiative is the result of a unique collaboration between four Finnish companies, including Volare and Alltech Fennoaqua, covering the entire value chain from ingredient sourcing to retail. By integrating insect protein into commercial fish feed, the project sets a new benchmark for responsible food production while delivering high-quality, locally farmed seafood.

Volare produces insect protein at its pilot facility in Hvinkää, and has plans to expand operations to its new plant in Finland. The special Kalaonni Arkinen rainbow trout fillets will be sold across Finland starting on April 7.
