Butterfly Network Targets Early Identification of Tuberculosis
References: stocktitan.net & businesswire
Butterfly Network, a medical technology firm specializing in compact ultrasound devices, is participating in an international research initiative named CAD LUS4TB, which will assess the effectiveness of an artificial intelligence tool designed to work with its portable ultrasound equipment for the early identification of tuberculosis in Sub-Saharan Africa. The project is supported by a substantial grant from the European Union.
The research initiative involves multiple institutions that will work to train an AI algorithm to recognize signs of TB in lung ultrasound images. This technology is intended for use by healthcare personnel without specialized radiology training. This is expected to facilitate quicker initial patient assessment in areas with limited access to laboratory facilities or advanced medical imaging.
The study is scheduled to commence in September with a cohort of 3,000 adult patients, with an ultimate objective of influencing public health policy to incorporate this diagnostic method.
