WD Unveiled HDDs With Dual Pivot And HBDT For Flash-Like Throughput

Western Digital introduced a new class of hard drives featuring high bandwidth drive technology (HBDT) and dual pivot actuator designs, aimed at boosting sequential throughput for large-scale storage.

The announcement described HBDT as a method to read/write multiple adjacent tracks simultaneously and dual pivot as a second actuator that increases parallelism, combining to raise transfer rates. WD said these changes produced up to 4x throughput gains in its examples, with future 8-track designs targeting even higher speeds.

The company positioned the drives for workloads that favor sustained transfer rates—AI training, data lakes, object storage and large video streams—rather than small random-access tasks. By prioritizing throughput per terabyte, the approach could let spinning media shoulder workloads typically reserved for SSDs, potentially easing NAND demand and affecting enterprise storage economics. For data-heavy organizations, the result promises lower cost-per-terabyte performance for sequential workloads while keeping HDD capacity advantages intact.
