Breakaway Charging Ports

Microsoft Adds Magnetic Connect to Its Surface Laptop Ultra

Microsoft is adding Magnetic Connect to the Surface Laptop Ultra, giving it a magnetic charging cable that attaches through a standard USB-C port rather than a dedicated power connector. The magnetic connection is designed to detach if the cable gets pulled, helping prevent the laptop from being dragged off a desk.

The connector has a funnel-shaped tip that guides it into place, making it easier to attach without looking. Because it uses USB-C Power Delivery, the port can still connect to accessories such as monitors and phones when the laptop is not charging. Support for up to 240W also gives it enough power for most laptops.

Unlike a proprietary magnetic connector, Magnetic Connect uses the USB-C standard, potentially giving users more choice when replacing cables or accessories. It combines the convenience of a breakaway charger with a port that can still handle other everyday connections.
