Lightweight eMTB Motors

Maxon Launched a Full-Power Drive Unit in a Compact Frame

The maxon BIKEDRIVE AIR S is what happens when an aerospace-grade motor manufacturer decides that light-assist and full-power shouldn't be mutually exclusive categories. Tipping the scales at just 2.03 kg, the Swiss-engineered drive unit delivers 620 watts of peak power and 90 Nm of torque — nearly triple the output of its predecessor — without meaningfully changing its physical footprint. The result is an e-bike motor that slots into frames slim enough to pass for non-motorized rides.

On the trail, the AIR S runs quietly and delivers power with a linearity that rewards rider input rather than masking it. Its efficiency ratings lead the field, and thermal management holds steady across extended climbs despite the absence of active cooling. The current 400 Wh battery limits range for longer rides, though a 600 Wh option is in development. For riders prioritizing agility and integration without sacrificing performance, the tradeoff is a reasonable one.

Lightweight High-power Drives
An unprecedented power-to-weight ratio enables eMTB performance levels previously confined to bulkier systems, opening potential for rethinking vehicle weight distribution and handling.
Seamless Integration Design
Slim motor form factors that mimic non-motorized frames create new expectations for aesthetic and aerodynamic integration across personal mobility products.
Thermal-efficient Compact Motors
Passive thermal management in a small enclosure suggests opportunities for prolonged high-output operation without complex cooling systems.

Sectors Adopting This

E-bike Manufacturers
Compact full-power drives present a pathway for product lines to offer both lightweight models and high-performance variants without separate platforms.
Outdoor Recreation and Trail Services
Quieter, more natural-feeling eMTBs could shift trail user dynamics and demand for routes optimized for higher average speeds and longer climbs.
Aerospace-grade Component Suppliers
Miniaturized, high-efficiency motors developed with aerospace expertise indicate cross-sector demand for premium, lightweight propulsion modules.
