Handstitched Denim Sandals

Birkenstock and Jesse Leyva Honors the Art of Boro in New Capsule

Birkenstock continues working with Jesse Leyva to celebrate the art of Boro, which is a traditional Japanese technique of repairing and reworking fabric materials. It does so through sashiko stitching and patchwork and to form the capsule, Leyva traveled to Japan to get to its roots. Leyva heads to the flea markets throughout the island and selects 75 Boro blankets from collectors.

These blankets are already an upcycled item and it undergoes another upcycled process by the designer. The exclusive collection spotlights three specific silhouettes -- the Boston, the Arizona, and the Zurich sandals. Each one is hand-stitched with various detailing and finished in different indigo-dyed fabric patchwork. They are mixed and matched across the Boston and fully covered on the Zurich and Arizona.
