Dystopian Hand-Carved Jewelry

Captve Makes Accessories with a Narrative

Jade Boutilier, the founder of Captve, creates handmade jewelry that tells a story. The accessories are custom carved in Montreal and fuse personal ornaments with sculpture. Captve's handmade jewelry is inspired by Michelangelo's "unfinished" series and foster conversations around material and intention. Similar to the statues, Boutilier influences each handmade jewelry design by colliding the organic with the man made. Using the lost wax process, Boutilier creates her pieces by hewing them in wax and casting them in sterling silver, bronze or gold. Each collection of handmade jewelry draws inspiration from history and philosophy, articulating a concept with each connection between accessory and sculpture.

Boutilier's abstract ideas create an eerie portfolio of hauntingly beautiful collections. Her latest handmade jewelry ensemble 'Acanthus' circulated around the dystopian relationship between man, structure and nature. Its predecessor 'Manus' explored anxiety, comfort and claustrophobia and was featured in the Guillermo del Toro exhibit at the AGO.
