Statue-Inspired Sofas

Ákos Huber's 'Wing Sofa' Takes Inspiration from the Nike of Samothrace

During a trip to the Louvre Museum, Ákos Huber was inspired to create what eventually turned into the 'Wing Sofa.'

The sofa has a unique form that includes a bent beech plywood sofa body and a flexible six millimeter rope that forms the main seating piece. As the name of the sofa suggests, the furniture piece takes cues from the classic Nike of Samothrace statue, which is expressed in the lightness and dynamism of the design.

The marble Winged Victory of Samothrace that once inspired the creation of Nike's iconic logo remains a major source of design inspiration for many. Some of the similarities to this famous logo can be seen in the swooping elements of this furniture piece when viewed in profile.
