Surface Computing Project

Microsoft has been trying to keep their secret project, code-named "Milan," hidden from the public, but now we can give you the dirt!
If you loved the concept behind London's Bar 24 (see below), you'll love the new touch-screen photo-sharing coffee table Microsoft has been working on. "Surface computing" will optimize the way we share photos, and use wireless devices. This technology has been mentioned on Trend Hunter before, but now we can bring you an update, complete with video footage! If you think this sounds too futuristic, you'll be shocked to know Microsoft plans on having the devices available by the end of 2007.
The classic appeal of print photographs will return when you spread out your digital photos on the coffee table. It will be as easy as placing the camera on the surface and letting the table's infrared cameras scan the device. From there you'll be able to drag your fingers across the table and shuffle through them, organize them and even resize them. Your friend wants a copy from that wild night out? Just drag them over to their camera, iPod or other wireless device. No computers involved!
Your friends can join in the fun to thanks to the multi-touch technology. Instead of only being able to process one input at a time (like a computer with a single mouse cursor) you can have several people interacting with the table at a time.
It doesn't stop at photo sharing either. Love the tracks on your friend's iPod? Place yours on the table next to his and simply drag the files over. Check out the video to see how the table recognizes info from other wireless device too. In the not-so-distant future, Microsoft also believes users will be able to make purchases straight from the table simply by placing credit cards on the surface.
Technicalities are hard to explain, so you're best off checking out the video clips.
Imagine the day you place a bowl of chips on the table and infra-red cameras scan it to let you know the nutritional value of the food you're about the eat! Hey, at the rate technology is moving these days, it shouldn't be too far off! Especially if we consider that Bar 24 can already scan your drink to recognize the exact cocktail you're sipping.
Too many possibilities! Watch our embedded video, and if you're fascinated, be sure to check out the video coverage on Popular Mechanics.
