Glow in the Dark Carpets

Footlume Electroluminescent Flooring

Footlume is a new flooring design which lights up when you walk on it. The electroluminescent carpet makes use of weight sensors to detect pressure points. The contact areas then light up accordingly. It is powered by rechargeable batteries.

At the moment, the light-up rug is still a prototype. Some experts think that responsive surfaces such as Footlume will be the next big trend in high tech homes.

Footlume looks great, but it has an important practical application: home safety. The soft glow of the carpet will help keep you safe when you are trying to make it to the bathroom or kitchen half-asleep at night.

Footlume’s inventors, Leona Dean and Zoe Robson, are engineering students at London South Bank University. They point out that “[Footlume] can provide ambient mood lighting or flash in time to music as a talking point at a party.”
