Preferred News Sources

Google Lets Users Prioritize Publishers Across Search Experiences

Preferred news sources are giving audiences greater control over their digital content as Google expands personalization across Search, Discover and Google News. The new Preferred Sources button allows readers to prioritize selected publishers in Top Stories, AI Overviews and AI Mode, while Discover will let users describe topics and links they want to see more or less frequently. Google News is also adding customizable audio briefings based on selected topics and participating publishers.

For Google, these features shift content discovery toward more active user participation rather than relying entirely on algorithmic recommendations. Publishers could benefit from stronger visibility among readers who deliberately select their sites, potentially encouraging repeat traffic and deeper audience relationships. The approach also gives Google additional preference signals for tailoring its services, demonstrating how search and news platforms can balance automated recommendations with greater consumer control over content discovery.
