Front Covers With Black Backgrounds Break Old Publishing Rules

Whether on a single issue or in all of them, magazines seem to be skipping the design faux pas of using black backgrounds. The website Mag Culture identified what can possibly be a distinctive way to play around with the rules of magazine design.

"Publishing folklore says a black backgorund is a strict no-no for a front cover. Yet here are three current magazines from different countries breaking the rule," the site says.

"They look strong, don’t they? Black is the perfect backdrop for the conceptual cover and lets the logo and cover lines stand out easily."
