To juxtapose the rigid geometries, the lofty heights and the density of the urban fabric, Rainbow Ropes is a project that proposes the playful reclaiming of empty city lots. Neglected areas are common in most American metropolitan neighborhoods and they would undoubtedly benefit from a brightening up.

Virginia Melnyk has envisioned the installation of of structural steel frameworks from which an elaborate lattice of colorful cords can be strung and woven. A network of fibrous tunnels would be established, allowing children to climb all over and through the equipment. Adults too might find the strung up spaces to be whimsical havens, like hammocks guarded from the direct light of the sun. Rainbow Ropes would bring revitalizing life and energy into the cold corners of the city.
