Sonoma County's Medlock Ames Winery has produced a brilliant spin on the classic picnic table motif. Although created by advance wine connoisseurs, the Ames design is basic and easy to reproduce. Upon removing the innermost slab of wood, any durable substance can be input; in this case, a rain gutter has been used. After some light bolt work, all that is left to do is fill the space with crushed ice, making for a quaint chilled storage space.
The Medlock Ames picnic table adaptation represents a growing customization niche. Instead of replacing furniture pieces, the company has opted to work with what it has, adding updates to authentic goods that may otherwise have received little if any attention. The lesson imparted by its design move is that through slight tweaks, conventional pieces can take on an entirely new feel.
