The Merkx & Girod Bookstore Fuses Church Architecture with Commercial Sales

The Netherlands-based architectural duo Merkx & Girod have produced a remakable sacrosanct bookstore. Located in the Maastricht area, the structure’s mixture of divinely authentic themes with the far more modern publication industry has made for an impressive construction project, and an incredibly unique customer experience.

The Merkx & Girod bookshop features high concrete ceilings, stained glass windows and drooping light fixtures. Patrons of the holy emporium are actually invited to read their choice of novel or magazine over a cross-shaped table, a feature that brings about a contemporary religious feel.

The divine bookshop speaks to a growing religiously-themed architectural movement, one that has been consistently seen among fresco revival projects and even commercialized maze exhibits. As far as bookstores go though, the Merkx & Girod edifice has taken the sacred cake.
