GoodWeave Tackles Exploitation in the Handmade Carpet Industry

GoodWeave is an organization that touches on various social and production strands. First and foremost, it's a campaign to end child labor. It does this through what's called a GoodWeave certification that monitors manufacturers to ensure their rugs are child-labor-free, as well as by offering education and support to at-risk youth. Lastly, their website offers resources on how to purchase a GoodWeave rug -- whether it be in-store or online.

Despite its invisibility, slavery exists today. It's hardly on the docket for discussion and it's considered, once again, one of those tragedies that have been relegated to the past. It's over, it's done. The human race is beyond it. Right? Obviously that's not the case. Whether it's slavery in so-called modern industrial agriculture settings in Florida, like the book Tomatoland by Barry Estabrook sheds light on, or child prostitution, the information can't be ignored.
