The most recent lunar eclipse occured today, June 15th. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes behind the earth. This means the earth blocks the sun's rays from striking the moon. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned exactly, with the Earth in the middle. This means a lunar eclipse can only occur the night of a full moon. The type and length of an eclipse depend upon the Moon's location relative to its orbital nodes. The last recorded lunar eclipse took place on December 21st, 2010.

According to Buzz Feed, "A total of 85 total lunar eclipses, according to the scientists, will be taking place this century of which the longest total lunar eclipse will occur on July 27, 2018."
