25 Brazilian Fashion Inspirations

A Tribute to Style Icon Carmen Miranda

Carmen Miranda would be 100 years old if she was alive. T Magazine did a cover shoot inpired by her style, São Paulo Fashion Week Fall 2009 was dedicated to her.

Her style was a true mash-up! She combined makeup elements typical from the 1940’s and 1950’s looks, black eyeliner and red lipstick, with tropical elements related to Brazil, such as the use of fruits and round skirts. At the same time, she had this Broadway, glitz and glamor thing along with some masculine features, such as men’s jackets and shoulder pads that we relate with stars like Lauren Bacall or Katherine Hepburn.

Although not a consensual figure - some may accuse her of stereotyping a wrong image of Brazil, too “exotic” and “typical” - she was a reference and a pioneer as one of the first ambassadors of Brazilian culture.

Here, you can see how her style still has an echo in today’s fashion!
