Fire Department Textile Upgrades

The San Francisco Fire Department Adopts Non-PFAS Turnout Gear

The San Francisco Fire Department has initiated a complete replacement of its protective ensembles with gear manufactured without per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. This transition is facilitated by a combination of federal grant funding from FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant and departmental capital. The venture was executed with the help of textile innovator Milliken & Company — which introduced Milliken Assure™, "North America's first non-PFAS, non-halogenated flame-resistant moisture barrier" — and gear manufacturer Fire-Dex.

The San Francisco Fire Department's new ensembles have undergone extensive field trials in active training scenarios and hold certification from nationally recognized safety standards organizations. This serves to verify their compliance with stringent performance benchmarks for heat resistance, durability, and protective integrity.
