The Ritz Marie Portfolio is Black and White Beautiful

The RItz Marie portfolio does a great job of illustrating how a photographer can create a distinct aesthetic by marrying his/her work to a certain stylistic trope, and still manage to create images that are diverse and fresh.

Ritz Marie hails from Manilla, Philippines and graduated from the University of Asia and the Pacific with a degree in International Marketing Communications in 2004, where she served as the Photo Editor of the yearbook in her final year. After moving to Canada to pursue her post-graduate studies at York University, she began to add to the Ritz Marie portfolio by working closely with Toronto's Elite Model Management.

My favorite part of the Ritz Marie portfolio is her image of a model wearing tight, black pants and a blazer with no shirt, casually smoking a cigarette while staring into the camera with a mixture of edge, disdain, and ambivalence. The city skyline is prominent in the back, and the photograph seems to encapsulate exactly what initially attracted Ritz Marie to photography. "Since I was a child," she writes in her bio. "I had a fascination with recording beautiful moments in time."

Luckily for us, her fascination continues.
