Proton Announced 'Lumo' as a Privacy-First Chatbot
Colin Smith — July 24, 2025 — Tech
Proton Lumo is a privacy-centered AI chatbot that secures every conversation with zero-access encryption, ensuring only the user’s device can decrypt message content. The system does not retain server-side logs, and Proton refrains from viewing, sharing, or using chat data for model training. Underlying Lumo are several open-source language models—including Mistral NeMo and Mistral Small 3—alongside task-specific engines such as NVIDIA’s OpenHands for code generation.
Available via web, Android, and iOS, Lumo provides core chat functionality at no cost under a weekly query limit, with an optional Lumo Plus subscription ($12.99/month) unlocking unlimited use, larger file uploads, and access to more advanced AI models. Privacy-driven features include an opt-in web-search toggle, encrypted file-analysis uploads, and a “Ghost Mode” that automatically purges conversations upon session end. No Proton account is required to begin using Lumo, and integration with Proton Drive allows secure analysis of user documents without persistent storage on Proton’s servers.
