A series of large-scale energy storage grid stabilization projects may help create an energy storage system to capture excess power and release it as needed thus moving utilities one step closer to a cleaner grid.

Spurred on by Xcel Energy's successful use of a huge battery to manage power fluctuations from wind power, the Department of Energy is allocating stimulus funds to assist with launching a number of energy storage-related grid stabilization projects in the hopes that practical solutions to alternative energy blocking problems will result.
