Although the influence of fencing on fashion has been with us for a while, the artistic version of Joanna Berzowska’s most recent project, the “Skorpions”, takes the interpretation to an extreme. Her “kinetic electronic garments”, composed of traditional textiles, shape memory alloy Nitinol, magnets, and electronic circuits move and change with the body in slow organic motions. “The anthropomorphic quality can be imagined as parasites that inhabit the skin, they breathe and pulse with their own fears and desires. They refer to the history of garments as instruments of pain and desire."
