This Father-Son Photography Will Pull at Your Heart Strings

Kristen Schmid turns her lens towards her own family in order to capture heartwarming father-son photography. The project, titled 'Father to Son,' documents the complex, ever-evolving relationship between her husband, Ted, and their eldest son Sam. The project spans over seven years, recording Sam's growth from newborn to youngster, and the development of the father-son bond.

Of her project, Schmid states, "I am interested in what it feels like to be the parent, and in what it feels like to be the child. I am trying to distill what I know is important about how they interact with each other, and how that changes over time."

Schmid notes the polarity of parenthood; it can encompass dual, often conflicting emotions, such as play and discipline or love and frustration. Beyond simply being heartwarming, Schmid's series explores the emotional mosaic that is parenthood.
