Painting with Photo Chemicals

Christine Nguyen's Unique Art

Maybe artist Christine Nguyen is the reincarnation of the Japanese Edo artist Jagyoku who I reported on earlier. Like him, she has developed a peculiar technique of tiling squares of painted color and, also like him, she manages to create an ethereal, dream-like world that is really hard not go get sucked into.

Unlike him, Nguyen paints on photo emulsion paper with different chemicals and paints, making her peculiar creatures look almost strangely alive. I had a chance to see her large scale installation at the Hammer Museum in LA, and as you can see in the picture, the huge wall of swimming, glowing underwater creatures really makes you feel like you are part of another world.

Make sure and check out my post on the Edo artist Jagyoku.
