White-Light Antimicrobial Fabrics

UPV Scientists Develop Self-Disinfecting Cotton Fabric

UPV scientists developed a self-disinfecting cotton fabric that works under ordinary white light, giving hospitals a textile that can neutralize microbes without blue or ultraviolet lamps. The experimental material pairs regular cotton with chitosan and cyanoguanidine, then adds photosensitive dyes that trigger the cleaning effect when light hits it.

In lab tests, the fabric fully inactivated E. coli in 60 minutes and Enterococcus faecalis in 20 minutes, while also reducing Candida albicans over three hours. It was later placed on bed rails and mattresses in 12 patient rooms in Valencia, where the light-exposed samples collected far fewer microorganisms than untreated cotton.

Retention after 20 wash cycles makes the fabric more practical for repeated hospital use. A textile that can plug into existing white-light conditions could lower the barrier to cleaner linens and surfaces without adding new lighting hardware.

White-light Disinfection
Everyday illumination becomes a hygiene infrastructure layer as textiles and surfaces gain antimicrobial functions without specialized UV or blue-light systems.
Self-cleaning Medical Textiles
Hospital linens, mattress covers, and touchpoint fabrics are evolving into passive infection-control tools that reduce microbial buildup between cleaning cycles.
Wash-durable Bioactive Materials
Reusable fabrics with antimicrobial performance after repeated laundering create practical pathways for durable, lower-maintenance healthcare environments.

Sectors Adopting This

Healthcare
Clinical facilities gain new options for embedding continuous microbial reduction into patient rooms, bedding, and high-contact surfaces.
Textiles
Fabric manufacturers can differentiate commodity cotton through functional coatings that add measurable hygiene performance while preserving conventional use patterns.
Facilities Management
Maintenance and cleaning operations are being reshaped by passive antimicrobial materials that complement sanitation protocols without requiring major hardware upgrades.
