Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway personal transportation system, is now tackling another, more critical global concern - the availability of clean water. Appearing on the Colbert Report on Comedy Central, Kamen explains that he has developed a vapor compression distiller, which requires no filters, membranes or chemicals to purify water. The raw water can be taken from very diverse sources, from the ocean to contaminated wells, even puddles. Kamen’s goal is to put the distiller into production and distribute them world-wide. Each of the compact distillers, about the size of a large trunk, has the capacity to provide a up to 1000 liters per day of clean water to those who most need it. Kamen claims this availability of clean water could ultimately result in a 50% reduction in global water-borne diseases.
