There has been a boom in niche, hipster artists emerging into popular culture, such as M.I.A.

This musical shift marks a new transition in the music world. Hipster culture, which is no new evolution, seems to be heading this new frontier of the music scene. The prerequisite for success as a band is no longer based on having a million dollar music video budget, but rather in having a witty name and offbeat persona.

Seattle-based band ‘Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head’ has emerged on the scene with the approval of mainstream celebrity blog queen Perez Hilton. The band fits the definition of counter culture music with their esoteric lyrics and quintessential thrift store vibe. It will be interesting to see the transition of niche bands into mainstream society.
