Upcycled Canvas Portraits

The Paintings of David Agenjo Fuse the Old with the New

The stereotypical image of an artist angrily throwing away a canvas after making a mistake or simply realizing that the artwork is not what he or she was expecting is quite famous in movies; however, this is not the case of Spanish artist David Agenjo. This talented painter prefers to work on previously used canvas.

Canvases covered in paint are what inspired Agenjo to create his own portraits. The old layer of paint adds texture and history to the new, superimposed art. He works on one canvas which will later become the same one he will be using to create a new piece.

If you happen to be in New York City or you live there, you can check out some of the paintings by David Agenjo at the exhibition entitled Beautiful Body at Porter/Contemporary Gallery in New York until February 18, 2012.
