Design Within Reach holds a champagne chair contest each year. Entrants must construct a mini chair using the wire, cork, cage, and foil of no more than two champagne bottles. Glue is allowed, but nothing else.
The repurposed champagne cork entries were judged by a panel of industry experts after online voting by the public. The winning chairs are on tour at the Design Within Reach Studios. The schedule is on the website.
Jesse Menayan’s Kub Armchair won the Judges’ Pick, Tony Nemyer’s Grape Divine Chair was selected the DWR Staff Pick and Gavri Slasky’s Spring 2009 nabbed the Popular Vote. Those weren’t easy decisions – there was much design acumen demonstrated in this year’s entries. (Nothing like a bottle of bubbly to get the inspiration going…) Want to see some more? The three winners, plus 47 other finalists, are now on a nationwide tour of DWR Studios.
