 Although the story was supressed for some time, a 9 year old recently gave birth to a baby in Singapore to the horror of her parents. This seems to be a recurring trend since news of another little 9 year old girl giving birth, this time in Brazil, hit the news in the summer of 2006. Although cultural differences do exist and social norms vary, the abuse of young girls seems to be a growing problem across the globe, and unfortunately, this abuse occurs at the hands of close family members, friends and other adults in positions of authority.  A nine-year-old Singaporean student, who did not realise she was pregnant, gave birth to a boy after it became too late for her to abort the baby. Her horrified mother found out that her daughter was six-month pregnant when she took her to a doctor for what she thought was a urine infection.
Samples taken... indicated that as much as 20 per cent of the population under 15 years of age may be susceptible to sexual abuse by adults. The surveys showed that the sexually abusive individuals came not from dark abysses of society but from our day-to-day lives. They are the people we know and trust
