Virtual Compassion

Sharing Photos of Hurricane Ike

As Hurricane Ike threatens Galveston and Houston, gas prices are one of many thing on people’s minds. Comfortingly, events like this reveal what I’m dubbing virtual compassion.

The internet has become a digital sharing ground for global events, like Hurricane Ike, and a platform for people to share experiences, console each other and, through media sharing, letting strangers across the world experience like in their shoes.

People are sharing photos of Hurricane Ike’s impact on Galveston and Houston, Texas, they’re sharing rants about gas prices, and are sending loving messages of compassion and encouragement.

The New York Times posted some great photos, called “Texas Braces for Hurricane Ike” and “Damage From Hurricane Ike,” some of which are seen in the gallery, and are now being shared between thousands of people online.
