Port Townsend, Washington artist Seth Rolland has been designing and making fine art furniture for the past 17 years. The fine craftsman says his sculptural designs are inspired by nature, but onlookers may notice that the arches and supports of bridgework are also evident.
Staring with a sketch, Rolland then makes scale models and works out key parts with full size patterns. Woods are selected to best express the furniture design and the context in which the piece will be used.
Rolland wants his work to be touched and seen through multiple senses -- not just the eyes. As is true of many woodworkers, Rolland prefers to use sustainably harvested woods to create the textures, edges and curves that comprise each piece.
