The Shibuya Girls Bunkasai Uses Exotic Allure to Attract Customers

Each year, over the course of one week, an audacious fashion event called the Shibuya Girls Bunkasai is held at the ground zero of Japan's style district, the Parco Shopping Mall. This year's shopping spree, which targets adolescent women especially, has used a salacious, yet admittedly enjoyable marketing ploy to attract local interest: pole dancers!

In the cavernous foyer of the Shibuya Parco Mall, cleverly-costumed women pirouetted and pranced across a lit stage, showing off their deft moves and referential disguises. The purpose: to spread word of the Shibuya Girls Bunkasai, an annual shopping event aimed at younger girls -- considering the crowd, however, you might middle-aged salary men were the target demographic! Although pole dancing may not be your idea of an ingenious marketing tool, it certainly generated considerable buzz in a city which typically shies away from open displays of sexuality. The burlesque appeal of the dancers, perfectly timed with Halloween, proved the ability of pole dancing to draw a crowd in.
