Shape-Shifting Metallic Structures

Artists Nils and Sven Volker Pay Homage to Light and Air

If you've ever been hypnotized while popping a bag of Jiffy Pop, you're not alone, artistic duo Nils and Sven Volker took inspiration from the classic expanding metallic top in their recent piece Capture. Capture attempted to channel the aesthetic beauty of Light in Air. The installation was presented at the MADE Space in Berlin. The elaborate piece was constructed using 252 inflatable silver cushions and four hanging walls accented with 304 framed graphic pages, which graphic artist Sven calls "books on walls." The silver cushions were the handiwork of Nils a machine artist, and the two pieces were synthesized through the elaborate use of sound and light.

The landscape of the installation is altered and transformed with every passing second. The viewer's perception of the piece is never static as the light falls over the ever changing dimples and creases of the metallic puffs as they rise and fall. The sound, lights and movements of the bags are prompted by the changing chapters of the graphic novel prominently displayed on the surrounding walls.

Not only have the Nils and Sven Volker created an awe-inspiring structure they have also pulled off a deeply affecting performance.
