Crowd-Funded Footbridges

'I Make Rotterdam' Uses Donations to Determine Luchtsingel's Length

The city of Rotterdam, Netherlands, is building a pedestrian bridge in a most unique way with the 'I Make Rotterdam' project. The project was created through a collaboration of the city's 5th annual International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) and ZUS, an architectural firm based in Rotterdam. The project aims to build a crowd-funded pedestrian bridge called the Luchtsingel from the city's Central District to Pompenburg and Hofbogen.

What makes the I Make Rotterdam project so special is that every wooden board purchased through the project is to come from donations. Donations range from $32 (25 EUR) for a single plank to $1,600 (1,250 EUR) for an entire section, with each person who donates allowed to write a custom message on their plank/section. The bridge is expected to require 17,000 planks of wood to complete and is currently 14 percent funded.
