AIDS-Curing Stem Cells

Bioengineering Offers Gene Therapy Cures for AIDs

Paula Cannon at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California has been working with a team of researchers to find gene therapy cures for AIDS. By stitching genes that outwit the AIDS virus into immune stem cells then implanting the fortified cells into patients, the scientists have been able to produce positive preliminary results.

The altered stem cells train the body to make chemicals that disable a key receptor that HIV needs to establish new rounds of infection. Gene therapy cures for AIDS are among the most promising biomedical research areas under study.
