Solar-Powered Cities

The Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town Will Be a Planned Eco Conurbation

As engineers continue to improve existing green technologies, the Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town will demonstrate just how effective the current systems are when installed within new receptive structures. Panasonic, in collaboration with eight other companies, aim to turn one of its old factory sites in Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan into a planned city that will act as an ideal example of eco-conscious living in both the residential and commercial realms.

Solar panels will cover every roof, a network of sensors will control urban illumination, roads will be designed for electric vehicles, and the capacity to store wind energy and rainwater will make this an exemplary zero-emissions metropolis. The energy-efficient urban environment will see infrastructure complete as early as 2014, with a goal to complete the Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town by the end of 2018.
